Is dying painful for pets?

Not inherently, no. The pain that shows up at the end of life almost always comes from the underlying disease, not from the process of dying itself. As the body begins to shut down, it releases its own natural pain-relieving chemicals, endorphins and enkephalins, that offer real comfort without medication.

Should you force-feed a dying pet?

No. Force-feeding is appropriate for an illness a pet can recover from, not for the natural dying process. Loss of appetite is normal at the end of life, and forcing food or fluids can create physical distress rather than relieve it. Offering a taste is fine; forcing is not.

Are seizures normal at the end of life?

Generally, no. True seizures are uncommon in the dying process. Some neurological activity can appear as the body winds down, but if you see an actual seizure, contact your veterinarian or hospice provider promptly, since that falls outside the range of normal signs.
