Most conversations about pet loss focus on the animal — what they needed, what you provided, whether you did enough. Very few conversations focus on you: what you are carrying, what you actually feel, and what professional support for pet grief looks like when the people around you don't fully understand.
This series does exactly that.
Over four episodes of Peace of Mind for Pet Parents, Karen Wylie, EdD, and Gail Pope sit down with Judith Eve Rosen, LCSW — licensed clinical social worker, veterinary social worker, and author of Life After Pet Loss: Daily Reflections for Working Through Grief — for the most clinically informed conversation about pet grief this podcast has hosted.
Judith has spent her career working with grieving pet parents, veterinary professionals, and trauma survivors. She understands that the loss of an animal companion is real grief — not a lesser version of human loss — and that it sometimes requires the same quality of professional support. She brings both clinical precision and genuine warmth to questions pet parents often feel they aren't allowed to ask.
Whether you are caring for an aging or ill pet right now, navigating the aftermath of a sudden and traumatic loss, carrying guilt about a decision you made, or searching for a way to stay connected to an animal who has died — there is something in this series for you.
THE FOUR EPISODES
Episode 056: Someone in Your Corner: What a Veterinary Social Worker Can Do for You and Your Pet
Most pet parents have never heard of veterinary social work. In this first conversation, Judith explains what veterinary social workers actually do — and why almost every pet parent could benefit from knowing this field exists. She shares the moment in a veterinary waiting room that led her to this specialty, walks through the four domains of veterinary social work, and opens up the surprising emotional world that veterinarians quietly carry.
Episode 057: Grieving Before and After Pet Loss: Anticipatory Grief, Trauma, and When to Seek Help
Grief doesn't always begin when a pet dies. For many pet parents it starts much earlier — with a diagnosis, a loss of mobility, a life that slowly changes shape. In this episode Judith explains anticipatory grief, the added trauma layer that comes with sudden loss, and how PTSD can take hold after a devastating pet loss experience. She introduces Cognitive Processing Therapy, explains prolonged grief disorder and its current clinical limitations regarding pet loss, and offers clear guidance on when grief may benefit from professional support.
Episode 059: It's Not Guilt, It's Regret: Understanding the Difference That Changes How You Heal After Pet Loss
One of the most important distinctions in pet loss grief — and one that almost no one makes clearly. Judith explains the clinical and legal difference between guilt and regret, and why that distinction can change everything for a pet parent who is punishing themselves for a decision made in love. She shares her own experience of losing her beloved cat Joanie, and how even she had to rediscover the full truth of what happened before she could begin to heal. Gail Pope adds her perspective on self-compassion as a caregiving practice — not something you find after the loss, but something you cultivate throughout it.
Episode 061: Rituals, Remembrance, and the Love That Doesn't End: Healing After Pet Loss Through Continuing Bonds, Grief Rituals, and the Neuroscience of Loss
The final conversation in this series turns toward healing — not as closure, but as continuation. Judith and Karen explore the role of ritual in pet grief: why rituals matter, how to create meaningful ones when traditional structures don't acknowledge pet loss, and what the continuing bond theory tells us about staying connected to animals who have died. The episode also addresses disenfranchised grief — the grief that others don't validate — and what needs to change in our culture for pet loss to be treated with the dignity it deserves.
