When you sense that your pet is approaching the end of their life, one of the deepest fears a caregiver carries is this: Will I know what's happening? Will I be able to tell if they're suffering?
The PEACEFUL Guide was created to answer those questions — calmly, honestly, and before you need it.
It's a free reference guide that walks you through the signs of a natural, peaceful passing — what to watch for, what is normal, and what can be done to support comfort in those final hours and days. It won't tell you what to decide. It will help you understand what you're witnessing.
PEACEFUL: The Quality of Dying Guide Signs of a Peaceful Passing
What PEACEFUL Stands For
The guide is organized around eight areas, each represented by a letter:
- P — Pain: Dying does not cause pain. Disease causes pain. This is one of the most important distinctions caregivers need to understand — and one this guide addresses with practical, compassionate guidance.
- E — Emaciation: Significant weight loss is normal at the end of life and is generally not a source of discomfort to the patient.
- A — Appetite and Thirst: Decreasing appetite is a natural part of the dying process, often preceding a decrease in thirst. Neither should be confused with a reversible, treatable condition.
- C — Comfort: Guidance on keeping the environment clean, quiet, and stress-free — and the critical importance of caregiver calm.
- E — Eleventh Hour: What physical changes may be observed in the final hours, and how to respond.
- F — Fluid: How dehydration progresses naturally, and how the body's own endorphins promote comfort as it does.
- U — Unresponsive: How to understand and support an animal as their awareness turns inward.
- L — Low Energy / Listless: What natural rest and quietude look like at the end of life.
About This Guide
The PEACEFUL Guide was developed by the GRACE Animal Hospice Consortium — GRACE standing for Gratitude and Respect for Animals and their Care at the End of Life. Its founders include Gail Pope, Founder of BrightHaven; Ella Bittel, DVM, Founder of Spirits in Transition; and Kathryn Marocchino, PhD, Founder of The Nikki Hospice Foundation for Pets — the nation's first nonprofit devoted to home hospice care for terminally ill companion animals.
Between them, these three educators represent decades of direct animal hospice experience. This guide carries that weight on every page.
BrightHaven Caregiver Academy is honored to offer it to pet parents as a free resource.

How to Use It
Print it. Keep it somewhere accessible — not hidden away, but close. Read it before you need it, so that when the time comes, the information is already in you. Use it as a reference alongside your conversations with your hospice-trained veterinarian.
You don't have to face this moment without preparation. And preparation, in this case, is one of the most loving things you can do.
