Walking into a vet appointment when your pet is seriously ill or has just received a difficult diagnosis is one of the most emotionally charged experiences a pet parent can face. You're scared. You're hoping for good news. You're trying to remember everything you wanted to ask — and then the vet is in front of you and your mind goes blank.

This guide is designed to change that experience.

Preparing for Your Vet Clinic Visit Mock up

Preparing for Your Vet Clinic Visit is a free, printable planning guide that walks you through what to do before, during, and after your appointment — so you arrive prepared, leave informed, and feel confident that you advocated well for your pet.

Because you have every right to ask questions, request clarification, and leave with a clear understanding of what's happening and what comes next.

The guide is organized in three sections:

Before the Appointment: How to prepare a written summary of symptoms, medications, diet changes, and behavior observations to hand to the veterinary team — including a tip on sending it by email the day before so the vet has time to read it before you arrive.

During the Appointment: How to navigate the clinic's intake process, share key information effectively with the vet tech, and ask the right questions in the exam room — including what diagnosis means, what treatment options exist, what comfort measures are available, and how follow-up will work.

After the Appointment: How to document your visit, organize your care plan, and set up a communication channel with the clinic for follow-up questions between appointments.

The guide also includes printable planning sheets for each of the three phases — spaces to write your notes before you go, your questions for the vet, and your action steps afterward.

A Note on Advocacy

One of the most practical tips in this guide is also one of the most overlooked: ask for copies of blood panel results and any other test results before you leave the clinic. They belong to you, and having them means you can track changes over time, share them with a specialist, or review them when you're calm rather than overwhelmed.

You are your pet's best advocate. This guide helps you show up in that role with confidence.
